Portsmouth, RI. – An Portsmouth Abbey School female wrestler was named All-American Wrestler on February 26th, 2022, with her performance at the 86th Annual National Prep Wrestling Championships in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Portsmouth Abbey IV Former (Tenth grader) Daniella Gasso from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, placed second at the Prep National Championships to earn the title of All-American. While this is a great accomplishment, this is just her first full year of wrestling, “she said; this is just the beginning, and is really looking forward to the next two years.”
Gasso started wrestling as a sophomore in the 106 weigh class, making strides throughout the regular season; unfortunately, She missed the Eastern Independent Leagues Tournament because of a COVID exposure protocol. Daniella then came back to wrestle in the Girls New England’s (2022 NEISWA Prep Tournament) at Deerfield Academy, CT, with a tough loss in the first round; she pinned her way through the Consi-rounds, where she finally placed 4th while competing against girls from prep schools of all sizes.
Then at the 2022 National Preps, Gasso came into her own, quickly pinning her way up through the 107 weight bracket until the finals, where she met Sakina Cotton from Phillips Andover, ending with second place after a quick fall by Cotton.
“It was an experience. Being out there in front of everyone, all the work I did throughout the year was right there. It was nice to show the girls at the Portsmouth Abbey that everybody can wrestle,” Gasso said.
“The Portsmouth Abbey girls wrestling has grown to include five girls this season, up from two in 2021. We are all excited to congratulate Dani for her national runner-up placing and, as All American, The first All American wrestler from the Abbey. I see great things happening in our future.” States Coach Mike McLarney.
